Information Policies in Asia:

Development of Indicators

Kavita Karan

UNESCO presents a broad definition of information policy consisting of the collection of policies and strategies to promote the development of an information-based society. They include statements of policy, legislation and regulations as well as programmes and initiatives designed to achieve policy goals. These policies include, but extend beyond, those that are concerned with the promotion and use of information and communication technology. These information policies are concerned primarily with
the economic and social use of information. In some countries the policies also extend to the use of information in the cultural and political spheres.
